Children, Families and the Internet

This report is the latest in our series of groundbreaking, methodologically sound surveys. In it, you’ll discover what’s driving today’s media-savvy kids and families and learn how to respond with usable strategic recommendations based on the findings in each chapter.

This study was conducted in partnership with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with underwriting from Bell South, Kodak, and Educational Testing Service.

Findings are based on multiple survey waves with interviews, conducted by phone and via online surveys, of thousands of U.S. kids, ages 2-17, and their parents. The report covers educational content, the school-home connection, media/Internet use from home and school, kid influencers, e-commerce, and media trade-offs as well as parent attitudes, needs and wants.

Following are some examples of the key strategic questions addressed in this report:

  • Where are kids really going, and what are they doing on the Internet today?
  • What draws children to visit some sites over and over again, and turns them off from others?
  • What are families buying on the Internet and how do they respond to online marketing?
  • What do families most want from the Internet that they aren’t getting?
  • How do parents see the Internet today - their hopes, fears and day-to-day accommodations?
  • What do students and parents say about school technology use and the school-home connection?
  • What is keeping some children and families away from technology and the Internet?
